Remembering Etrusco – Part Three – Early March 1956

John B. Hynes was the Mayor of Boston in 1956. Early March found him dealing with the passing of his brother James and a lot of snow.

It was a time during which the newspapers still published the ships returning with troops from Europe and Asia.

In entertainment news the acclaimed actor Marlon Brando dealt with controversy over his engagement to the daughter of a French fisherman, Josanne Mariani-Bérenger. The romance did not last as an affair with Anna Kashi led to a pregnancy and he married her instead of marrying Josanne.

The Red Sox were in Florida preparing for the upcoming season. While many looked at Mel Parnell as the ace, it would be Frank Sullivan who would lead the staff. Sullivan was a two time All Star.

Just in case you wondered: Ted Williams would hit .345 in 1956.

Another highlight of the time was Gene Conley playing for the Boston Celtics and the Boston Red Sox.

In one final sports note, Killer Kowalski appeared at the Boston Arena. Wrestling was a top draw at the gate and on television in this period.

In Scituate, Town Meeting had been held. It was somewhat contentious as a great deal of discussion focused on salaries for town employees. The Scituate Herald offered this treatment of the debate.

Other members of the town departments saw their recommended salaries debated as well. That must have been a great deal of fun.

Proposed changes were in the works to the Howard Johnson’s located on Route 3A just south of Greenbush. Some of the neighbors had problems with those changes.
