The Edge of Summer

School groups came last Monday during the day. The Elementary schools of Scituate make these trips each year and kids can get a proper introduction to the historic side of town. It is the clear sign that we are at the edge of a new summer.

Additionally this past Monday night I saw a family pause by the rose bushes on the ocean side of the house. They seemed to be looking at the family of rabbits that have chewed many of my flowers down to the dirt. A short while later there was a knock on the door. Answering it I was asked if I had a box as the family had discovered an injured rabbit and was going to take it from here to seek care for it in Duxbury. I called it a win when I handed over the box and there was one less rabbit here.

There was something going on this week at the foot of the driveway on Tuesday. I believe there was a commercial filmed here but I was coming back from an airport run and by the time I got into the house and figured out there was action taking place, all I got was this picture. I will be digging a little to see if I can figure out what it was all about.

Once I was settled I had a job to do. We have gardens in need of water and with our annual water ban townspeople are asked to wait until after 5 o’clock. I usually put it off until 7:00.

There have been some skies that have caught the eye lately. Some of these shots are from the web cams and some were taken on the ground.

The shot above is from an improved Mouth of the Harbor Camera. The prior camera had trouble holding focus. In the lower left corner you can see another raised bed of flowers which is new this year.

Open House was held here Sunday June 7th. We had a very small crowd which allowed each group time for questions and photographs. We were grateful to the Garden Club for the donation of a beautiful centerpiece. Julie did all the work and I did all the talking.

One of the suprises of the day was this tattoo. I have a friend whose son has something similar and I had to get this picture to be able to compare the two. And the answer is no. I will not be getting one.

A summer long project began last weekend with the flying of the 1776 Betsy Ross/Francis Hopkinson American flag. This morning saw yet another version of the 13 starred banner placed on the Cedar Point flagpole. An explainer of each flag will be placed in the message board you can see here in the bottom center. I have been doing this research since last fall in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of American Independence. It has been a lot of fun to look at the 19th century with a new lens. Coming up next week is the Cowpens flag to be followed by the Guilford Courthouse and the Serapis or Franklin flag.

I will be linking to those explainers in the top menu soon.

A group from Silver Lake High School came yesterday and included students from all over the country. Los Angeles, Galena Illinois, Montana, Texas, New Mexico, and Ohio were represented. We got some great pictures posed on the finger piers and I fielded a few questions. This was yet another win as they were bookmarking the blog site to share with their folks when they returned home. It is always a pleasure to see students react to the ocean and the waves and the sounds of Scituate Harbor.

Thank you for noticing the effort. The Beautification Commission has stepped up over the last few years and the help has made a huge difference.

Love the Flag History and pageantry. I used to pass the Betsy Ross House on my daily run through Baltimore back in the late 1970’s. On longer runs I’d circle by Fort McHenry. But the flag that flew there, inspiring our National Anthem had 15 stars and stripes – after Vermont and Kentucky joined the US.
    Keep up the good work!

Thank you for you feedback. I wasn’t sure anyone would be as interested as I was when I thought this project up in the winter.
