Spring was coming and Etrusco was in limbo.

What to do with the ship and who might do it were open questions that dominated thinking in Scituate.

In early April Mrs. Russo and BM William E. MIller were presented with tokens of appreciation by Captain Gaetano Traini. The flag has a home at the Maritime and Irish Mossing museum today.

The Scituate Herald also had coverage that was very practical. Costs were mounting.

In another detail from late April, Edward Bielski joined the Scituate teaching ranks. He will be on that job for a long time to come. Several other names who will serve in the schools made the April papers as well. Peter Nord was home from the service and Larry Keenan was hired to coach. The Patriot League has a division named for him today.
Mary Bauer, who will coach everything, and win more often than nearly anyone, was appointed at this time. Also, there is a note that Charles Patterson is training at the State Police academy. He will retire as a Sergeant many years into the future.

In another sign of the optimism of the times, the Scituate Herald ran this ad in early May.

Helicopters at the grocery stores and remote control lawnmowers. The enthusiasm for gadgets was never ending.
The Chamber of Commerce ran this ad in the Sunder Gloge under an article that will appear at least 6 times in the next few years.

Combing the local papers you could find details on the marriage of former Scituate Historical Society Trustee Marshall Litchfield, Driftway stalwart Ralph Smith attending Angela Medici’s birthday party, (they were five, I think) and the sad story of the Bonomi children being placed with their aunt and uncle in Brighton.
Back on the beach little was happening but the crowds were growing bigger and bigger as the weather got better and better. The national news had Brocton legend and Heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano retiring, amateur Ken Venturi nearly winning the Masters, Heartbreak Hotel went to number 1 for Elvis, and Nat King Cole was attacked on stage in his home state of Alabama. Grace Kelly and Margaret Truman had or were planning nuptials.
Highlighting a difference from today – the Boston Marathon was held on a Thursday – there was not yet a Patriot’s Day Monday holiday.

It was getting warmer but summer had not arrived just yet. Pretty soon, school would be out and the streets of Scituate would be jammed with Dodges and Fords and Plymouths and Chevys.
