Just as decisions were being made on Cedar Point about Etrusco, another disaster at sea stole all the attention away.

The Italian liner Andra Doria and the Swedish liner Stockholm collided in a fog off of Nantucket on July 25, 1956. Details concerning and disputes about the crash would continue for months.

Small children were separated from parents. The wife of actor Cary Grant survived to tell the tale.

There was a Scituate connecton as a Globe photographer named Dan Sheehan who lived up on Third Cliff made way in a helicopter for a fellow photographer after Dan had taken his shots for the paper. The person who replaced him at the window was Harry Trask. His 1957 Pulitizer Prize photo is below. Dan never begrugded Harry his success.

In Scituate there was a small dust up on the water. A well traveled ketch called “The Fiddler’s Green” had its sail blow out and sought refuge in Scituate Harbor.
