Some snapshots today of the grounds as the country marks the anniversary of independence from Great Britain. The 3rd of July has taken over as the main night for celebration and this year’s was enhanced by a huge house party across the harbor that ended at midnight with Whitney Houston’s version of the Star Spangled Banner.

Most of the fireworks had ended at the sensible hour of 10:00. Marshfield folks and Duxbury folks continued on their respective beaches but it had become quiet here. Then, at 11:30, a barrage began. It lasted roughly 20 minutes and I had gotten out of bed to ask how much long it was going to continue. At the bottom of the driveway I met Mark Donovan, the fire chief. He and I watched the crew responsible return to their truck and drive off. They never spoke to us but did, for some unknown reason, find it necessary to curse each other loudly as they went. I spoke with the chief; he told me it was relatively good night with only two injuries from the pyrotechnics. I wished him well and turned to the house.
Just before heading in I saw a flare on the beach. Going to the fence I realized that the boxes the rockets had been launched from were on fire.

I had filled up two five gallon buckets earlier in the day to use as weight to hold down a pop up tent against the wind. I hauled those down to the beach as Whitney began her tribute and saw to it that this flare up was shut down. Walking back to the cottage I heard, “Ore the land of the free and the home of the brave.” It was now the Fourth of July.
